Use of CAN nanoparticles as markers for fluorescence diagnostics and radiology and as contrast media for magnetic resonance imaging should be especially advantageous. Especially promising is working being done to make these particles selectively reactive towards certain cell types. To achieve this, particles are linked to biomolecules (ligands) that dock selectively at certain cell receptors. In the long term quick tests could make it possible to diagnose and treat at an early stage certain diseases but also plaque deposits in blood vessels and pathologic cell changes before a tumor develops.
